Saturday 15th March
A few curveballs came our way this March, but our intrepid bird surveyors pressed on—and what a story they’ve got to tell.
The original survey date, 8th March, happened to fall on a long weekend. Since our volunteers more than deserve a break, we pushed it back a week. Apologies to Emma and anyone else who turned up on the original date—we’re working on a better system to avoid confusion in the future!
Then, on the 15th March, we hit another snag. Our usual survey areas were blocked off as council prepares to begin works on the southern wetland (want to know more? Come along to our talk on Monday 1st April, 7:00pm at The Shed!).
But even with these challenges, our volunteers carried on and recorded an impressive 461 bird sightings. That’s no small feat! However, things weren’t quite what they seemed—waterbird numbers had halved, and the big total was largely thanks to a very large and chatty flock of corellas.
Nature keeps us on our toes—and so do public holidays and construction works. Thanks to everyone who took part and adapted so brilliantly!
